Specula are a group of medical insertion instruments which are used to gain a more detailed view inside a person’s body during an examination. Vaginal inspection

Most doctors these days use a two-bladed vaginal speculum to make gynaecological examinations. This instrument looks a bit like the open bills of a duck and has a locking screw to hold the blades in place. The two blades of a vaginal speculum are hinged and closed when initially inserted. After insertion, the vagina is dilated as the blades are opened to their final position. At this point, the blades will be fixed apart with the locking screw. This relieves the need of constant pressure by the doctor and so leaves them free to make their examination in more detail. Transparent plastic specula are now the preferred choice for most examinations as they make it is easier to view the area. These types of specula are single use surgical instruments and so are discarded after use with each patient. Metal specula are also available but they are general use surgical instruments and so must be cleaned and autoclaved after use.
